On Poindexter Street in South Norfolk, the Weekday Block and the Saturday Block Run on Different Clocks

Three addresses within a few doors of each other on the 1100 block of Poindexter Street keep schedules that hardly touch. Rich Port Coffee at 1107 and Southside BBQ & Catering at 1113 are weekday businesses. The South Norfolk Farmers Market at 1115 runs only on Saturday mornings. So a Tuesday lunch and a Saturday market trip happen on the same stretch of sidewalk but almost never at the same hour.

For anyone who lives within walking or short-driving distance, the street's two schedules decide whether a trip there pays off. The block is also heading into a building period that will change how it handles parking and gathering space by 2028. The construction is the first project aimed at the block as a whole.

The Week, Address by Address

Here is how the three schedules line up, based on each business's posted information as of fall 2026.

Day Rich Port Coffee, 1107 Southside BBQ, 1113 Farmers Market, 1115
Monday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Closed Closed
Tuesday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or sold out Closed
Wednesday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or sold out Closed
Thursday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or sold out Closed
Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or sold out Closed
Saturday Listed closed Closed 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., through Nov. 21
Sunday Listed closed Closed Closed

Southside BBQ's hours come from its own takeout menu, last updated Aug. 30, 2026. The market's dates and times come from its Visit Chesapeake listing. Rich Port's hours come from an undated listing on a third-party coffee-ordering directory, and we couldn't confirm them against a post from the shop. A quick call to 757-322-7017 before a weekend visit is the safest plan.

Laid out this way, the gaps are easy to see. The coffee shop and the barbecue counter are both open Tuesday through Friday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. On Saturday, the two businesses on either side of the market's address are closed while the market is open. On Sunday, none of the three is open.

The Weekday Block Has Its Own Calendar Inside the Calendar

Weekdays on the block aren't all the same, because Southside BBQ changes parts of its menu by day. Joe and Vicki Josue's shop runs as takeout and catering. You can order by phone at 757-543-5778 or at the counter at 1113 Poindexter St. The current menu has several items tied to particular days:

  • Chicken & Dumplings: Wednesdays only, $6.50 or $10.00
  • BBQ Chicken Quarter: listed as Monday, Wednesday and Friday only, $5.50 as a snack or $11.00 as a meal. The shop's posted hours start on Tuesday, so in practice that means Wednesday and Friday
  • Brunswick Stew: marked "Sometimes," $7.50
  • Family Pack: a pound of pulled pork or chicken, two large sides, rolls, two brownies and sauce, $25.00

The phrase "until SOLD OUT" on the menu means it pays to arrive early, especially on Wednesdays. The shop has sold out before. Its first big public appearance was South Norfolk's 2019 Fourth of July Celebration, and it ran out of food before 1 p.m. In May 2026, the Hampton Roads Chamber named Southside BBQ & Catering its Small Business of the Year for Chesapeake.

Rich Port Coffee covers the morning half of the weekday. The Virginian-Pilot reported in February 2026 that the shop held a grand opening for its South Norfolk location in December. Owner Miguel Diaz is a Navy veteran who started roasting his own coffee at Selden Market in 2021, then opened a kiosk in the Truist building in downtown Norfolk two years later. The shop serves Puerto Rican coffee in honor of the owner's heritage. It also roasts coffee from Colombia, El Salvador and Mexico and sells pastries and local products. On Rich Port's website, the Puerto Rican beans are described as hand-harvested Arabica from Hacienda Tres Angeles. Reviews on the directory listing mention a coquito cold brew, quesitos, two seating areas and a room where children were coloring.

Put together, the best weekday plan is straightforward. Coffee is available from 7 a.m., barbecue from 11 a.m., and both are open until about 4 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday, with Wednesday bringing the dumplings.

Saturday Belongs to the Market, and the Season Is Short

On Saturday, the action moves next door to 1115 Poindexter. The South Norfolk Farmers Market offers produce, baked goods and locally made products from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Admission is free. The city runs it with the stated goal of promoting locally grown products and giving shoppers direct access to local farms. Produce vendors are encouraged to apply, and the vendor fee is $50.

The 2026 season started June 20 and ends Nov. 21. As of Sunday, Oct. 4, seven market Saturdays remain: Oct. 10, 17, 24 and 31, then Nov. 7, 14 and 21. A 2025 city calendar entry put the market at Elizabeth River Park. The 2026 listing uses the Poindexter Street address, so go by that one this fall.

One of those seven Saturdays runs well past 1 p.m. On Oct. 24, Backyard Vibes N Ent hosts Vibe O' Lantern at 1418 Poindexter St., a few blocks up from the market. It runs 5 to 9 p.m. and is billed as an annual family fall event with vendors, arts and crafts, games, food, treats, music and an outdoor Halloween movie on a 20-foot screen. That day, Poindexter Street has something going on in the morning and the evening, with the afternoon open in between.

After Nov. 21, Saturdays on the 1100 block go quiet until the market comes back. The city's big December events are outside South Norfolk this year. The Chesapeake Rotary Christmas Parade on Dec. 5 runs to City Hall on Cedar Road. The Deck the Hall light display at City Hall, 306 Cedar Road, runs daily from Nov. 26 through Jan. 2, 2027.

The Construction Is the First Plan for the Whole Block

Each of the three businesses sets its own hours. The city's current work on Poindexter Street is the first project designed for the block as a single place, and it starts with parking.

At a groundbreaking on Friday, Sept. 12, 2025, the city started work on the South Norfolk Municipal Building. That same month, Public Works staff told the South Norfolk Revitalization Commission the contractor was mobilized. They said the work would be phased to help keep parking available on site and would take about two years. The building faces Poindexter Street between the Gateway Building and ForKids. It's going up on a site that has provided public parking for the library, ForKids and other nearby destinations. Plans call for a 45,000-square-foot building that brings together city services, including the Police 2nd Precinct, Treasurer, Human Services and Planning, plus a public garage with 297 spaces.

During construction, the city's FAQ describes temporary parking north of the campus with an entrance from Grady Street. It also points to a city lot a block east, across Poindexter. Street parking remains, but there are fewer spaces on the north side of Poindexter near the work. The city expects construction to last through the end of 2027, with the campus opening to the public in early 2028.

The second phase depends on that garage. Chesapeake plans to turn a 165-foot stretch of Guerriere Street, between Poindexter and Decatur, into a pedestrian-only plaza. Plans call for seating, shade and work by local artists. WTKR reported in April 2026 that the city wants it to be a place for neighbors to gather, eat and relax. Joe Josue told the station he had mixed feelings about it:

"I think it's a nice, would be a nice addition to the Poindexter Street landscape... We are stretched on parking. That would be eliminating some very valuable parking right there."

The city's response was about timing. Olivia Knox, the plaza's project manager, said construction won't start until the new municipal center opens, so the garage will already be available. Welding students from the Chesapeake Career Center are designing the plaza's benches and planters. The project is part of a wider beautification effort tied to the city's 2045 comprehensive plan.

There's one more project to watch. At the September 2025 meeting, Public Works said a Poindexter Street sidewalk project was going out to bid and was expected to start in mid-2026. We haven't found a later dated update confirming that work has begun, so treat it as planned for now.

Here is the order of events. The garage opens in early 2028. The plaza is built after that, a few steps from the market, the coffee shop and the barbecue counter. Until then, the block keeps two separate schedules. Coffee and barbecue overlap from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays, and this season's last market is Nov. 21.

At Debbie Childs, we follow how projects like the South Norfolk Municipal Building and the Guerriere Street Plaza change daily life and parking on a block. If you'd like to know what's planned near a street you care about in Chesapeake, we're glad to help you find it. Let's Connect.
